Dosa is again one of the most common breakfast dishes that any South Indian is used to! If you are new to Indian food, a dosa is a crepe generally made of rice and lentils! Most restaurants boast of a number of dosa varieties – mostly modifications of the same batter 😄. I love the crispy variety of dosa with some spicy chutney on the side!!
Anyway considering that I love to have dosas I wanted to try it with some different grains. Actually a dosa made from wheat is quite popular but not many people are fond of it because it tastes quite different from the regular dosa! I agree that authenticity is really important and some dishes are best prepared the same way they were meant to be. But if that dish is a regular item on your menu, probably it would go a long way if you make it a little healthier! In this recipe, I have added oats and wheat flour to prepare the batter. Read along to find out where the avocado features in this :).
- 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/3 cup oats flour
- 2 tbsp brown rice flour (Can be substituted with normal rice flour or even all purpose flour)
- 1/2 ripe avocado chopped
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cumin (jeera) seeds
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- few tsp oil of choice for cooking the dosas
- Water to prepare the batter
Preparation Time: 10 min
Cooking Time: 10 min
Servings: 7-8 dosas
- Take a large mixing bowl and add the pulp of 1/2 avocado and smash it well with the back of a spoon.
- Add in all the dry ingredients to the avocado. Add water little by little till you get batter of pouring consistency. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes before making the dosas.
- While the batter is resting, place a skillet on the stove and let it heat. You can spread a little oil on it. Once the skillet is heated pour about 2 tbsp of batter and gently spread it to get an even consistency. You don’t want the dosa to be too thick, else the dosa will seem very heavy. Also, if the batter is too thin, the dosa might not be easy to make.
- Spread some oil while the dosa cooks. Once one side of the dosa is done, flip it over and cook the other side. After both sides are cooked, the dosa is ready! Repeat the process with the rest of the batter.
- This dosa is a little delicate and not too crisp because the avocado gives it a soft buttery texture. You could skip the avocado totally if you are not a fan of it! Serve hot with some nice veggie chutneys :).

Hi BS! Thanks for stopping by! You can totally skip the avocado too and make it into a spicy dosa with chillies, may be even uthappam if you sprinkle some onions and tomoto on top.. If you want to add a fruit, I have heard pineapple dosa is good. I have never tried it. You could also add ripe bananas, scoop the pulp, mash it well and add some sugar and make it into a sweet desert! It would be like a pancake dosa then, you can top with honey..
